AthensWas is an homage to classic modernism, which lends itself well to the available materials in the region, such as marble and walnut. Originally an apartment building, the hotel features spacious guestrooms with large balconies—a rare luxury in this cradle of Western civilization. The lobby is separated from the street simply by glass walls, inviting both guests and passersby in to marvel at the refreshingly modern take here. The glossy surfaces of Greek marble and walnut dominate the hotel’s cool design tone. The hotel’s high-quality marble comes in a range of hues and is found throughout the communal staircases, walls, floors, bathrooms, and verandas. Rich walnut, used in unexpectedly playful curves, is set aglow with soft illumination by Konstantin Grcic. Witty references to Greek history, such as images of sculptures from the National Archaeological Museum, pop up on the guestroom walls.
